About Brady Mathews

The person behind the studio

Brady Mathews founded Sojourn Design House to design more than rooms — to shape how a life feels inside them. This is where the studio's story begins.

The Founder

Why Sojourn exists

Brady Mathews is a designer of environments — a maker in a family of makers, trained in the rooms where American taste is set, and convinced that a home's highest purpose is to restore the people who live in it.

He founded Sojourn Design House in Austin in 2018 after years inside two of the most influential forces in American design. The studio is his answer to a simple observation: most houses are decorated, while few are truly designed around the humans inside them. Sojourn exists to close that distance, pairing luxury residential design with hospitality thinking, sensory intelligence, and an unhurried respect for how people actually live.

The name is deliberate. A sojourn is a temporary stay, and Brady designs with that honesty in mind — we are guests in our own houses, and the places where we dwell should hold us well while we are here.

The Formation

How a designer is made

( 01 — 06 )

The Rocky Mountains

Brady grew up in the Rocky Mountains, where harmony, balance, and symmetry were not lessons but landscape. That early fluency in nature still sets the studio's instincts for proportion, light, and calm.

A family of makers

He comes from a family line of architects, designers, artists, and builders. Drafting tables, job sites, and studios were the furniture of childhood; making things well was simply what the family did.

European study

Formal study carried him across Europe — architecture, interiors, art, and landscape — where he learned to read buildings and gardens as one continuous composition rather than separate disciplines.

West Hollywood

In Los Angeles, Brady was mentored under Kelly Wearstler, the AD100 designer whose West Hollywood studio sharpened his conviction that interiors can be layered, fearless, and deeply personal at once.

Leadership at RH

He went on to become one of the youngest senior design leaders at RH, helping shape the brand's rise as a design destination and learning to hold a singular vision at national scale.

Austin, 2018

Sojourn Design House opened in Austin in 2018 — a studio built to gather everything that came before it into one practice: intentional living, sensory environments, and whole human wellness.

Where we are heading is so much bigger than residential interior design. It is intentional living — aesthetic education, sensory environments, whole human wellness. We are not decorating houses; we are shaping how people feel inside their own lives. Brady Mathews · Founder

The Practice

How Brady works

Every project begins the way a great hotel greets a guest — with attention. Brady's hospitality training shows in details clients feel before they can name them: the sequence of a hallway, the temperature of evening light, a bath that behaves like a spa.

His instincts stay nature-led. Materials are chosen for how they weather and how they feel under the hand; palettes follow the logic of stone, timber, and sky rather than the season's trend.

That confidence comes from breadth. Brady has designed across residential, commercial, and hospitality work, including projects for celebrity clients and luxury brands — experience the studio carries quietly into every private home it takes on.

The result is a practice that moves without hurry: fewer projects, held closely, each one composed from threshold to final object.
